What had the stone wall done to you, that you had to fight it?? Poor you. Hope that all the bruising goes down and doesn't leave you with any permanent scars. See I'm not the only clumsy one, falling off a stair and smacking myself in the mouth with the stone tile. At least, (I hope) that all your teeth are still in the same place! Take care and take more water with it next time!!!!!

Sally, you silly sausage. Did you not realize that a stone wall is harder than you? I am so sorry to hear that you had tnis encounter. Hope you feel all fixed again soon.

Yes. All my teeth are still there. I've just gained an egg on the top of my head, and the poor wall had done nothing to me. And I hadn't even had a single drink. That came later and yes I do know now that the wall is harder than my head.

Hi Sally - poor old you. Nothing pleasant in bumping and bruising yourself. Hope you soon feel better. Keep thinking about Leicester - soon be here now, you'll be back to your usual self by then and we'll all make sure we keep you laughing. Hugs, Brenda

Gradually getting everything packed - must remember to throw in the odd blouse amongst all the stitching stuff!. Anticipation - lovely word; I should imagine it is building up in all of us now.
What on earth are we going to do when we come to the day when Jane says 'Okay, had enough; I'm retiring; no more weekends' Can't bear to think about it. We'll have to have a whip round for a big bottle of multivitamins or something to make sure she keeps going for as long as possible.
Hope the M1 is relatively easy Helen - see you soon.

Can;t we see if we can sort out a mirror in the attic, a la whoever it was who wrote The Portait of Dorien Grey, then she wouldn't get any older, and we wouldn't need to fear that she wants to retire? Anybody got an idea how we get one of those? (Or am I completely wrong in thinking that was the book it was in?) I'm sure you erudite lot will educate me if I'm wrong.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
Dorian stays young whilst his portrait ages and betrays the signs of his debauchery. Eventually he comes to a very sticky end.
Not a fate to be wished on anyone, I would say.

Yeah, but, no but, Jane would not have Dorian Grey's picture, she would have her picture and since their would be no debauchery to be reflected, it would be okay. Sounds a good scheme to me, Barbara.

Many thanks for the info Christine. But I'm glad Brigitte agrees with me, I do have some good ideas sometime!

Yes, I remember this. It was a book and a film. I think Dirk Bogarde played Dorien Grey in the film. As my memory serves me - he did something not quite honest, probably didn't pay the artist's bill - and a curse was put on him. As a consequence as he got older he just never aged but the portrait started showing the signs of ageing - so he plonked it in the attic. As Christine says - he came to a sticky end and at the moment of death the two circumstances changed - suddenly the man himself lay on the floor with a face covered in wrinkles and the camera then showed us the picture in the attic - with the face of a young man man again. That Oscar bloke couldn't 'arf tell 'em!.....

Dunno how much the film differs from the book, but in the original story it wasn't a curse, exactly - he wished that his portrait would age rather than him, and his wish was granted.
The moral of the story is no doubt to beware what you wish for 'cos you might get it (see also, "The Monkey's Paw" and other gothic horror stories)...

I've never read the book or seen the film, but I've heard about it. Thanks for educating me as to what it actully is about. Okay, so a picture of Jane in the attic isn't exactly what we would wish for her, but we'll have to think about something along those lines, but without the curse etc.

What we need is a Fountain of Eternal Youth!
(altho' I bet they come with a health warning too)

Oooh yes Christine! Actually that's funnier than you know. When we were in Germany at the hotel - was it in Freiburg? - the breakfast array of teas had one called Eternal Youth. On the second morning I told Jane I had a complaint - the Eternal Youth was missing. Don't know if she 'fixed' it for us, but the next morning there it was again amongst the Earl Greys etc.
Sadly it didn't work for me.

What a pity I only drink the normal English Breakfast Tea. A bit of Eternal Youth would not have come amiss to kick my body into sinc with my head. Up there I am thirtysomething, unfortunately my body is doing a flipping good job of ignoring that and behaves like an OAP. Not on, is it?

ooooh getting excited now.
Only 3 work days left :-)Posted 13 years ago # -
Or as my niece puts it - 3 more sleeps !!!

You're all making me incredibly jealous, cos I can't leave the invalid on his own, so I can't come, and after the ghastly couple of days I've had at work I need cheering up. Anyway, hope you all enjoy yourselves and have a lovely time. I shall be thinking about you all. Enjoy!!!
