I'm a newcomer to CrossStitch Guild. I just finished 1mx1/2 m counted cross stitch project by Mona Lisa. It has taken 1 1/2 years with dedicated work. Good news- the thread doesn't run. It has red lines as a guide and they won't come out. The dry cleaner declined - might run. The shop said wash in hot water and some soap. Online says dry clean only or wash in cold or wash with alcohol with a little rubbing and I'm seeing some "stretching". There are blank spaces intentionally on the pattern but with the red lines showing. Not good and the marks remain.
Mine is soaking right now - the red marks won't come off. It shows through some of the lighter threads. I could stitch with ecru to cover but I'm afraid the red will show through that also. Why, oh why, do they use an ink that cannot be removed easily?
Anyone have a good solution? W

I was about to suggest that you sew over the top, but then I read your message properly and realised you'd already thought of that. If the red marks are around the edge then you could always sewing around it in black/or appropriate dark colour if the ecru is too pale?
Bet you thought of that too though.
I haven't got any good ideas about washing them out. I don't trust my kits not to run so never wash them just in case. I've even got one framed on my bedroom wall at the moment where I can see a discolouration on it when I look hard enough.
You could try contacting the company that made the kit and asking them what they recommend you use?

I know some stitchers mark out a 10 x 10 grid with erasable pens. I would not do this myself for fear some of it won't come out. Better to count carefully and if a mistake occurs, just unpick. At least it won't spoil the cloth.
