I simply must tell you this little tale.
I was with my little stitching group last week - only 4 of us now - and it was our final meet up before Christmas and it fell upon me to take in a box of cakes and a bottle of low alcohol wine (all driving). The girls said they would contribute but I was going to refuse that until Joyce turned up with a £5 box of Roses and I thought 'if I refuse their money, Joyce will feel she has to do the same and that's not fair on her', so I accepted the other contributions - it was only something like £1.60 each and we then all contributed into what Joyce had spent. In the meantime I had been given some raffle tickets to sell by the choral society I belong to. We are a registered charity but to be honest people would rather buy raffle tickets for something more 'worthy', which I quite understand. As a result though it can be a devil of a nuisance to sell choir tickets. So, when the girls gave me their £1.60 each I decided I'd use the £1. part of it by putting their name to a ticket. I didn't bother to tell them or hand over the ticket as I thought they wouldn't stand a cat in hell's chance of winning anything. I did however put their initials in the corner of each ticket so I knew what belonged to whom. I also bought £5's worth myself.
Yesterday morning I had a phone call from a bemused Joyce - 'Bren - can you remember selling me a raffle ticket for your choir recently only I've had a phone call to say I've won a prize'. Me - gobsmacked - 'No, you haven't! - oh Joyce' - (giggle, giggle). I then explained what I'd done and added 'oh well, you've probably added a box of biscuits or a bottle of wine to your stack of Christmas goodies then - what a nice surprise'. 'Oh it is' she said ' Only it isn't biscuits or wine; I've won the first prize - £150'
I'm still laughing now..... you couldn't make it up!
Happy Christmas to all. Love Brenda
