  1. Hi All - now this is a message really about the Linkedin Network site, which I have been invited by various people to join. I think this is really lovely that people would like you to join in with the chats that go on but I'm afraid I do not like these type of websites where you have to register in and give personal details and so I'm using the Guild's Forum to say 'sorry' but I will not be taking up your offer.

You hear of horrible things nowadays with Trolls and Grooming and as I only use computers anyway as a necessity I try to limit my time on them.

Yes, I know - Brenda Midgley is a real party pooper so you have my permission to moan about me!.

This does though remind me of a little story.

Before I got married I belonged to a young people's group in which I was entered for the Region's Beauty Contest (yeh, yeh, I can see you all rolling about on the floor laughing). Anyway the local rag got wind of it and sent a reporter to my home to do a little feature (God they must have been desperate to flog newspapers that week) and take a photo. As a result of this I had a phone call from a man who said he would like to take an interest in my future and could we meet to discuss it. Stupid me (23 years of age) said okay and we agreed to meet at Waterloo Station. I was going out with my future husband at the time who - a bit more streetwise than me - said 'You're not going on your b----y own'. Geoff then said 'What else did he say to you' to which I replied 'He asked if I'd got long legs. I told him yes and I'd got long arms as well, but he didn't seem interested in those'

Anyway, we went to Waterloo Station at the appointed date/time. This person remember knew what I looked like because of the photo in the newspaper, but I hadn't got a clue about him so whether he turned up I don't know; but if he did he probably took a look at Geoff and thought 'not worth bothering'

But just think - I could've had a glittering career in the world of modelling with my long legs .....(or not!!)

Since then I've grown up a bit and am very wary of anything where I am not actually face to face with people!

  2. Hi Brenda

I agree with you. It's wisest not to give more details about yourself than is absolutely necessary. You never know who you are speaking to.
You hear so many tales of people in trouble for saying too much about themselves. At least on the forum we know who's who. Sally

Oh Brenda I so agree!! My husband Jeff, who works in computing, refuses point blank to have anything to do with these social network sites.
Facebook has caused so many problems at school with people putting things on there that they really shouldn't comments about other people and even videos of things at school. Also childern with Facebook accounts who are far too young, but the parents let them!! They are supposed to be 14 and the children I am talking about are 11 and under.
Just the forum for me where I know most people and now that we have Christine as Administrator we should be safe from those other wierd people who try to sell us peculiar things.

I do agree with you about social networking sites. A friend of mine, who insisted that they were safe, had her identiy stolen after she put some details onto her facebook site, so I'm afraid I won't have anything to do with them. I'll just carry on with the forum, where I know I'll be safe. Thanks Christine.

  7. I absolutely agree, don't do Facebook or Twitter or any others and stick to the Forum. Christine, you are doing a great job. Brenda - you would have made a beautiful model with your lovely slim figure, it is the world's loss but our gain!

Good to know there are plenty of us out there with the same point of view on these sites.
Well done Christine for keeping the "rubbish" off our Forum so that we can enjoy these on line chats.

  9. Monica you never knew me at age 23. I was a veritable stick insect in those days and would've made a good pin up for an Oxfam poster.

As for the scenario Barbara's described - how dreadful for her friend for such a thing to happen.

Isn't it just typical that along comes something so useful as these websites and someone, somewhere always has to do something to spoil it for everyone.

We are all seeing on the news these last couple of days about the problems RBS and Natwest are having in getting money into customers accounts. I'd give a pound for a penny that it's all being caused by someone delighting in troublemaking by hacking into the system in some way and spooking it for everyone.

Actually, the Natwest problem was caused by a genuine system update that unfortunately corrupted data. I'm not the least surprised that it happened in the first place - only that it has taken so long to correct. Naturally, the longer it went on, the more widespread the effect.

(I speak as one who's been there and got the tee-shirt in a past life and is only too glad to be out of it)

Although I trained as a teacher and have spent most of my working life teaching, I did about 6/7 tears working in a computer department, my husband also works in computing (not anything to do with banks though). As Christine says not surprised it happened, it sounds like the system update was not tested enough before it was installed. When my husband was on call the number of calls in the early hours of the morning with HELP this has gone wrong were unbelievable and this was often just testing new systems or updates.
