Hi - I am new to the site and waiting for my membership to arrive from CSG. I love cross-stitching and have only ever used Aida. I would like to try to use linen but it daunts (like hardanger) me even when I brought a small sampler. Any tips on how to get started please as I really want to move on with my cross-stitching. Thank you. Have a nice weekend. :)

    Hello,

I'm completely new to cross stitch too - and can't even sew.

I've only done one project so far, a small sampler, which was on aida, but I bought a piece of evenweave/linen and practised a few stitches on that, and I can honestly tell you, it's probably easier. It's so simple, you just miss one hole out. So put your needle up through the bottom left for your first part of the cross, miss one hole out diagonally and insert down in the next one. Do the same for the second half of the cross.

Linen is so much easier to use for fractional stitches too. My current - only the second - project has a few fractional stitches in it.

Get a piece of linen and practise.

Honestly, if I can do it, anyone can - really.

My own little trick is that I count the threads rather than the holes when I stitch on linen - my favourite - or even weave. The bonus is, fractional stitches are so much easier than on Aida. Just keep practising. It's easier than you think.

Thank you Katerina and Brigitte for your help. I will certainly give it a go and let you know how I get on. Most helpful. :)

I'm only a fumbling beginner myself but soon found I preferred linen to aida because it looks nicer and it's so much easier to do fractionals which i love, but it is easier to make mistakes so I just have to concentrate more. Cross-stitch is responsible for cups of tea going cold, ironing not done, telephone calls ignored, dog not walked.............
