  1. BUT! Brr! isn't it cold. Hope you are all remembering to feed the birdy dicks (my mother always called them that - funny how these things stick isn't it).

Well, what's new at this end of the week. I really must sort out my Christmas card box. I know I have quite a few left over from last year but probably need some more. It's writing the darned things that takes all the time. I take my hat off to those of you who stitch some as well.

Husband, fingers crossed, is finally coming back to life after his flu jab. I've put my nurses uniform away - doesn't do to get the patient over excited, they start getting funny ideas.

I'm pleased to say since Bradford I've managed to have a little stitch session most days and I really want to keep it up.

I put some more Pansies in the garden on Tuesday afternoon - they have been knocked over by the cold since then but their little faces are just so irresistible.

We have our volunteers night coming up at the RSPCA next week. It's a kind of thank you for our endeavours through the year and we get to learn what has happened to many of the creatures that have passed through our care. Last year for instance we were given up to date information on a black headed gull that had been treated in the wildlife hospital. He wears a little radio tag and now lives on a land fill site somewhere in Spain! Smart bird choosing somewhere warm.

Lovely to think we have Stitch That arriving sometime soon - everytime the postman comes up the drive I get a thrill as I look for the familiar size envelope. If it doesn't come today it might come tomorrow - it's always good to have something to look forward to.

Looked out of the window for inspiration and a Chaffinch has just flown into the garden. They used to be such a regular visitor when we first moved into this house but now we only see them infrequently. I put plenty of food out but at the moment we have 5 squirrels in and out of the garden and they seem to enjoy everything I put out. Squirrel proof containers? don't make me laugh - they just unhook the flipping things and go off with the whole caboodle - a very costly business I can tell you. Still, we are all God's creatures.

The weekend approaches - hope you have something nice planned. Oh - stupid me - it's Harrogate isn't it - actually, it's started today of course! Well, those of you who are able to go - hope you are having a really lovely time. Bye for now Brenda

The sun might have his hat on - also gloves, scarf and woolly coat if he's gone any sense!

Bright and cold here, but snow in Dundee, where my daughter is. Definitely prefer to be here not there :o)

    Hi Brenda and Christine
Had a few flakes of snow this afternoon while I was walking from my classroom at the side of the playground to main school!! It's too early for this. Apparently our new executive head has already sent text messages to parents telling them to listen to the local radio for school closures in case!! Husband is due to go shooting this weekend so I think he will be really cold!! Daughter wants to borrow the 4x4 so he might not even get there.
I think I will schedule stitching and it might even be O.K. to do the ironing as at least that is warm.
Only thing is Husband was due to go to Hales Owen for three days next week and if it snows he won't go which means I can't cook all the things he doesn't like (stew, anything with cheese which he can't have because of allergies), oh well will just have to have the usual stuff I suppose.

Well I'm very unimpressed with the weather forecast. So far, where I am there isn't any snow, which I'm very pleased about, but I've bought tickets in advance to go to Harrogate on Sunday. And Saturday they are predicting the snow, both here (Warrington) and even heavier in Harrogate.

I found a live webcam which is pointing to the new building work taking place at the Conference Centre in Harrogate. I keep checking it to see if it's snowing yet! I can imagine checking it first think on Sunday morning.

Other than that... went down to London on Friday last week to see The Lion King. It was very good! I can recommend it. I think kids in particular would enjoy it too.

Although it's bright and sunny here, it is freezing cold. Had planned to go to Norwich to see my grandson, but with the weather so unpredictable - we did have some snow yesterday - I cancelled the visit. I did not cherish the thought of doing that distance at snail's pace coming back tonight. Best to keep indoors and stitch.

Hi Andrea, I went to Harrogate on Friday and stayed over in a hotel, I thought my husband was joking when we woke up on saturday morning and he asked if I had seen the snow, I looked through the window and it looked as if someone had draped a blanket of snow over everywhere, lovely to look at but freezing when you are out and about, but we enjoyed the weekend. When we crossed back over the pennines to Lancashire( I live in Wigan) there was no snow whatsoever, just frost and freezing cold.

No real snow here yet (Berkshire) but went out to lunch in Windsor with our daughter today and really freezing temps. Mum 88 Years old in Bristol says they have had a light covering of snow since Thursday. It's definately too early for thiis!!!! Did some sewing today after lunch. If we have snow and school is closed will definately be stitching not working!!

I did go over the Harrogate on Sunday. There was a bit of a dusting of snow when we got there but nothing to worry about... that didn't happen until the afternoon!
We left at about 3:30 when the snow didn't look like it was going to stop, it was heavy flakes and it was sticking. Alas everyone else in the whole town seemed to have decided to leave at the same time.
did the first half mile in 1 and a half hours.
    After 3 hours we'd done 2 miles.
Then the pace really picked up and by 4 hours I'd done 8 miles. At this point I was now in the country-side just north of Leeds. Once I got to Leeds the roads were clear and I could drive at a normal speed. Eventually getting home at about 9:15. So 5 and a half hours home, from an hour and a half journey in!
It was pretty scary driving on he snow, I'm not a fan.
There hadn't been any snow here until today really. An icing sugar dusting over the roads and pavements. (I'm up in Warrington)
Hopefully it won't get any worse than this!

On another note... I have never been to the Harrogate show before and I was very impressed with it! It was huge for starters! I could have spent so much money but I was very good and restrained.

Would definitely go again another year.

Well we woke up to the snow this morning here in Berkshire. It has been snowing all day but not really settling as the ground was wet. The only problem will be if it freezes overnight and then we have more snow. The heating in my "terrapin" classroom decided this was the day to switch itself off!!! The caretaker has managed to fix it but says the timer clock seems to be wrong somehow and he will need to reset it at some point. Must get back to the kitchen as there is a big pot of stew cooking for my dinner (husband away so can have all the things he doesn't like!!) What a dreadful journey we are due to go to Fairford to meet family for a Christmas get together this weekend I think it might be cancelled if the weather forecast is that bad, but husband did make it to Birmingham this morning without too many problems.

    Question for Jean:

This has been puzzling me since you first mentioned it - what is a "terrapin" classroom? My imaginiation has been running riot!

  12. Hi All from snowy Yorkshire
We've had the best part of 12" this morning & we were supposed to be taking the Explorer Scouts on Christmas Camp this weekend. We're having to postpone it :(
Mick had to dig the chucks out this morning - they don't like snow & keep telling him so !!! Think they want wellies & jumpers.
Went to Harrogate on Friday & had a great day out with my Mum, then went out with Mick in the evening & finally got snowed on coming home from the pub.

    Hi Christine
A "terrapin" classroom is a prefabricated type building which is supposed to be a tempory, emergency building. This one was put on our playground when we were having major building work done and needed an extra classroom. That was some time ago (about 3 or 4 years) but it is in fact a very nice building with it's own loos and heating system. The local authority have not taken it away as it was cheaper to leave it on site than take it away!! It's official "posh" name is "The Study Centre" but I have claimed it as mine for my special 1:1 programmes which have special government funding at present. Are you going to any of Jane's workshops at Pinks Barn? If you are I'll try to bring a picture for you.

Thanks for the info Jean - it's not at all like my wild imaginings! I guess we just used to call them 'pre-fabs' in my day? Interesting how long a temporary building can be pressed into service...

To be honest Christine it is nicer than some of the permanent bits of the school!! Have run film club in there tonight with 2 LSA's lots of comfy big floor cushions drinks and pop corn plus a DVD!!!

I really detest this weather. I am not a winter person and can't wait for Spring. Getting rather concerned about the drive to Fairford next Saturday for the Christmas Stitch Day. I hope I can get there. Have been looking forward to it for so long, as I could not attend any other stitch meetings this year for one reason or another.

Hi, yes Brigitte I hate this weather too. Just got home from my course in Reading, held in an old Victorian school building so am now trying to warm up, my feet are still freezing!! We are due to go to Fairford this Sunday (5th) to meeet husbands family for a Christmas get together as it is half way between us and them. Will let you know if it happens and what the conditions are like if we get there. Mind you husband has to get home from Birmingham tonight first. I'm going to do a bit of tidying then it might be time to do some stitching. Hopefull will see you on December 11th at Jane's.

Hoping to see you all at Janes next week, providing the white stuff doesnt linger. I don't know about you lot, but I was sunbathing in temperatures of 30 centigrade last week, and arrived back in London to -3 c. I'm freezing, and I can't get my fingers to work stitching. Anyway, hope to see you all next week, to catch up on all the gossip.

Hi everyone, did get to Fairford on Sunday, no problems most of the snow had gone except on the fields where it didn't get the sun. Had a good lunch in The Bull with Family and a lovely trip to The Christmas Shop in Lechlade with daughter, son-in-law and "inheritied" 4 year old grand daughter. Spent far too much but got some lovely new decorations. Hope to see lots of you at Jane's on Saturday.
